The administration of Mbarara University of Science and Technology-MUST has agreed to review the policy on retakes, which prompted students to strike on Tuesday bringing work to a standstill.

Mbarara University recently, introduced a policy requiring a student to pay Shillings 200,000 to repat a single paper, while the one who fails three papers automatically gets a dead year (repeats failed year).

The policy didn't go down well students who staged a protest on Tuesday paralyzing work at the university campus and Mbarara town.

These pitched camp at the office of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Therestine Obua demanding an explanation from him but in vain as he decided to lock up himself in the office and declined to meet them.

Jaffar Magyezi, the DPC Mbarara tried to calm the angry students but nothing.

Robert Nabimanya, the Mbarara District Internal Security Officer, says they held a meeting with the university administration and agreed on how best to address the concerns of the students.

He commended students for being peaceful during their strike.

The university management would late sit and decide to suspend implementing the policy pending discussions with student leaders.  Professor Therestine Obua, the vice chancellor says the University has suspended the implementation of the policy to consult with the students.
