The Ministry of Health on Wednesday declared Uganda free from the deadly Ebola Virus Disease(EVD) Sudan strain.

In a ceremony held this morning in Mubende District, the epicenter of the outbreak, Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng stated that since the last patient was discharged on November 30, 2022, no patient has been registered.

"Having registered no new Ebola case despite sustained intense surveillance both at the epicenter districts and nationally, I now confirm that all transmission chains have been fully interrupted  and I take this opportunity to declare that the outbreak is over and Uganda is now free of active Ebola," said Aceng

Aceng said January 11 marks 113 days since the start of the epidemic. And on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, Uganda ended a 42-day countdown Ebola-free with no case reported in the period.

Two districts at the epicenter of the epidemic, Mubende and Kassanda, were placed under lockdown for two months until mid-December, but the government did not impose similar measures nationwide.

The World Health Organization says for a country to be declared Ebola-free, it should spend 42 days (two 21-day incubation cycles of the virus) without any new cases reported.

Ministry of Health figures issued as of November 30 show that the country had registered 142 confirmed cases, 56 deaths, and 86 recoveries.

Ebola 'risen from the dead' Zombie Story Is A Complete Hoax https://www.howwe.ug/news/healthandfitness/2752/ebola-risen-from-the-dead-zombie-story-is-a-complete-hoax Health And Fitness

The story, “Africa confirms 3rd Ebola victim rises from the dead, releases picture of first ‘Ebola zombie’ captured,” was shared which has been shared around the web, is posted on a satirical site.

The image caption reads: "For the first time in human history, confirmed footage is captured of a man who scientists watched die from Ebola then only several hours later, regain life and rise from the dead".

The site, Big America News, purports to be built upon the principles of “fearless reporting, loudly yelled opinions and facts proudly born of raw gut instinct”.

The image on the article, while impressive, is in fact doctored picture of a zombie from the film World War Z. It appears to have taken an image of one of the film’s lab-zombies, and merged it with this picture of a “realistic movie sculpture” from Schell Studios, which the messageboard 8chan pointed out.

It is just the latest in a series of rumours of Ebola victims being seen “resurrecting” after apparently being killed by the virus.

Reports of two separate cases of Ebola victims dying and then coming back to life in Liberia’s Nimba County have appeared in two African news outlets; All Africa and The New Dawn.

The reports suggest the women identified as Doris Qui of Hope Village Community, and Ma Kebeh, “resurrected” as they were about to be taken to burial.

However, as hoax-debunking site Snopes.com points out: “No corroborating report of Ebola resurrections have surfaced since the initial story was published in Liberia, and no details have emerged to clarify the circumstances under which the patients died.”

Another story that hasn’t helped the resurrection rumours is from when Good Morning America’s Dr Besser and his team captured a man thought to have died from the virus seen moving on film.

The man was filmed being prepared for burial when he was seen twitching his arm on the camera.

Four million men to be circumcised https://www.howwe.ug/news/healthandfitness/2641/four-million-men-to-be-circumcised Health And Fitness

According to daily Monitor More than four million men are expected to undergo Safe Male Circumcision (SMC) countrywide within a period of five years as one of the strategies to prevent HIV infections, the Ministry of Health has said.

Dr Michael Muyonga from the AIDS Control Programme in the ministry, said the country records 140,000 new HIV/Aids infections annually a figure that must be dealt with.

“Although the government launched the SMC in 2010, we have been registering a low number of men turning up for circumcision country wide and we intend to intensify the exercise,” Dr Muyonga said.

He made the remarks in Lira Town recently during an orientation workshop for media practitioners in Lango sub-region.

The appeal

“We have not yet realised the desired targets and require more involvement of all the key stakeholders for the success of the SMC programme,” said Dr Muyonga.

A male circumcision technical advisor with Northern Uganda Health Integration to Enhance Services (NU-HITES), Dr Leonard Were, said they have targeted more than 500,000 men in northern Uganda in five years.

“Our target is to provide 100,000 male circumcisions per year over a period of five years,” he said, adding that over 150,000 men have been circumcised in the region since 2012.

Study: Drinking Beer Helps To Improve Spatial Memory and Flexibility. https://www.howwe.ug/news/healthandfitness/2619/study-drinking-beer-helps-to-improve-spatial-memory-and-flexibility. Health And Fitness

A new study has suggested drinking beer may be good for you.

Research conducted at Oregon State University has revealed Xanthohumol – which is found in beer – might actually help people in terms of their spatial memory and flexibility.

Xanthohumol is found in hops and after conducting research on young mice, scientists have concluded that it might help the cognitive function of humans.

Interestingly, the research revealed the supplement was only successful on younger mice.

Hops are the only known dietary source of Xanthohumol and researchers have confirmed their experiment used the equivalent of 2,000 litres of beer – or 3,519 and a half pints.

Here Is How To Use A Female Condom https://www.howwe.ug/news/healthandfitness/2338/here-is-how-to-use-a-female-condom Health And Fitness

WARNING: This post contains content intended for Adults! - Get Me Out Of Here ↛.

The female condom is a sleeve-like device made of polyurethane. It has a small closed end, and a larger open end. Each end contains a flexible ring. Use this simple step-by-step guide to using female condoms to assure that you are using them properly during vaginal and/or rectal intercourse.

Difficulty: N/A

Time Required: 5 minutes

Here's How:

  1. The female condom must be properly positioned before any contact occurs between the penis and vagina and/or rectum. The female condom may be used for both vaginal and rectal sexual intercourse.
  2. For vaginal use, squeeze the smaller ring and insert it into the vagina. The large end should be place over the vaginal opening to protect the outer genitalia from infection.
  3. For rectal use the small ring should be removed. Place the condom over the erect penis. The condom will be inserted with your partner's penis.
  4. Be sure the penis goes directly into the large ring to preclude unprotected sexual contact between the penis and the vagina or rectum.
  5. Remove the condom immediately after sexual intercourse and before standing up. To avoid semen leakage the large outer ring should be twisted. Carefully pull the condom out and dispose of it.

Tips:

  1. Use care when storing condoms. They should not be kept in places with extreme temperatures either hot or cold. Do not store them in a pocket or billfold.
  2. Use a new condom for each act of sexual intercourse. Do not use the same condom for vaginal and rectal sex.
  3. Never use a male condom and female condom at the same time.
  4. Always use water-based lubricants with condoms. Oil-based lubricants will destroy latex condoms. Lubricants are not needed when condoms are used for oral sex.
  5. Never throw a used condom into your toilet, they can easily clog up your pipes and require expensive plumbing repairs.

What You Need:

  • Water-based lubricant
  • Female condom

The Republic of Tanzania’s former president Ali Hassan Mwinyi arrived in the country on Friday afternoon ahead of Sunday’s Rotary Cancer Run for which he is the chief runner.

Mr Mwinyi came with a group of 10 rotarians from Tanzania, according to Ms Enid Nambuya, the chairperson of the mobilisation committee for the Run, and is staying at Kampala Serena Hotel.

“Ex-President Ali Hassan Mwinyi arrived today, two days ahead of the Run and he will tour the Rotary Centenary Cancer ward at Nsambya Hospital tomorrow (Saturday) at 10am,” -- Nambuya said.

The Pepsi and Centenary Bank-sponsored Rotary Cancer Run, now in its third year, seeks to raise money to complete a 36-bed capacity cancer ward. It is estimated to cost Shs1.3 billion and is currently in its final stages.

The run is expected to attract at least 30,000 runners in the 21km, 10km and 5km categories and the flag-off ceremony will be at the Kololo Ceremonial grounds at 7am.

Registration for the run is at Shs10,000 at Centenary Bank (Mapeera House), Rotary Uganda Office on NIC Building, Bridge Credit Finance, and all Capital Shoppers supermarket outlets.

More than 15 corporate companies and thousands of individuals have already registered for the run that will also have parallel runs in Kyenjojo, Masaka, and Mbarara on Sunday.

Last year’s Rotary Cancer Run attracted 10,000 participants and raised over Shs90 million for the Ward. The first Rotary Cancer Run was held in 2012 and, with the support of sponsors and well-wishers, managed to raise more than Shs300 million.

6 Major Myths About Breakfast https://www.howwe.ug/news/healthandfitness/2100/6-major-myths-about-breakfast Health And Fitness

Did you eat breakfast today? Be honest! Or don't. Because it probably don't matter. New research conducted at Cornell University's Human Metabolic Research Unit suggests that breakfast may not be the most vital meal of the day after all. And it's not the first time experts have questioned the benefits of breakfast. See for yourself why the "facts" are so suspect:

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Your mom was right about many things, but this isn't necessarily one of them. Breakfast is only the Most Important Meal if it's your only healthy meal of the day (thank you, Greek yogurt), or if you regularly overdo it on pancakes and waffles and muffins and more, which could ultimately impact your health.

Breakfast makes you Smarter. Studies do show that when schools serve breakfast, children do better academically. But most of the evidence suggests that hungry kids who may not have access to food at home benefit the most. So in theory, the whole breakfast-makes-you-do-better-on-tests thing could be a bunch of bull and the truth is that kids perform better when they're not distracted by hunger, no matter what time of day they eat. Also, the jury is out on whether breakfast benefits the adult brain — there's not a ton of research on the topic.

Eating breakfast fends off hunger. If you skip it, you'll house anything and everything for lunch. Not necessarily. In the new Cornell study, study subjects either ate no breakfast, a high-carb 335-calorie breakfast, or a high-fiber 360-calorie breakfast. Yes, the breakfast skippers were the hungriest at lunchtime, but they didn't eat more calories than those in the other breakfast groups, and ended up eating fewer calories throughout the day. (Granted, this study was conducted in a lab, so it might not reflect real, snack-filled-office life.)

You can lose weight just by eating breakfast. Wrong again. In a small, 12-week Vanderbilt University study, researchers tracked the weight loss of 52 overweight women on different but calorically equal weight-loss programs designed to change up their breakfast-eating habits. Habitual breakfast eaters who skipped breakfast during the study lost slightly more weight than people who normally skipped breakfast and started eating it for the study. In the overall results, breakfast-eating habits didn't play a major role in weight loss or gain.

Breakfast = morning food coma. Actually, breakfast can give you more energy: In a six-week University of Bath study that assigned two groups of lean adults to either eat breakfast or fast until noon and then tracked their activity levels, researchers found that breakfast eaters naturally moved around more than those who skipped breakfast. The extra activity helped breakfast eaters burn almost 500 more calories than breakfast skippers, who were generally more sluggish.

Breakfast jumpstarts your metabolism so you burn more calories all day. Wouldn't that be nice? The fact is, breakfast doesn't significantly increase your resting metabolic rate (aka the speed at which your body burns calories). The Bath study also found that breakfast eaters burned about 11 more calories per day. Which is basically nothing, considering an average, moderately active woman in her 20s eats about 2,000 to 2,200 calories per day.

The Bottom Line: If you wake up hungry, eat. If your appetite doesn't kick in until later, don't force it or beat yourself up.

Man suspected of suffering from deadly Ebola isolated in Uganda https://www.howwe.ug/news/healthandfitness/2080/man-suspected-of-suffering-from-deadly-ebola-isolated-in-uganda Health And Fitness

Kampala: A man suspected of suffering from the deadly Ebola virus disease (EVD) has been put in isolation in central Uganda's Entebbe town, media reports said Friday.

The suspect was travelling from South Sudan and was stopped Wednesday after screening by health ministry officials at Entebbe airport, 35 km from the national capital Kampala, the Daily Monitor reported.

The tests for EVD are being done at the Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe, said Jane Aceng, the director general of health services at the health ministry.

She said there was no cause for alarm as the suspect came from South Sudan, which has not had any case of Ebola recently. “We are isolating anybody who has signs. If his results show that he is negative, we will let him go,” Aceng said.

Uganda, an East African country, has sent a team of its most experienced doctors and nurses to West Africa to help countries that are struggling with an Ebola outbreak there.

The World Health Organisation Friday declared the EVD outbreak in West Africa an international health emergency.

Ebola is a highly infectious disease with high grade fever and bleeding tendencies. According to WHO, the virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission.

Quick fixes for your worst period cramps and pains https://www.howwe.ug/news/healthandfitness/2041/quick-fixes-for-your-worst-period-cramps-and-pains Health And Fitness

Killer cramps, premenstrual backaches, monthly migraines... painful periods make up to 85 percent of women miserable every month. But these clever remedies may help cut your risk — and soothe the pain fast if you’re suffering right now.

Sneak in more fiber
Add at least 20 grams of fiber to your daily diet and you could cut your menstrual cramps, back pain and other monthly miseries 25 percent or more in two months, Canadian researchers say. Turns out fiber helps tamp down your intestinal tract’s production of prostaglandins—hormones that trigger uterine inflammation, bloating, tenderness and painful cramping. An easy Rx: Enjoy one cup of any high-fiber cereal—such as Bran Buds or Fiber One—daily.

Get a belly rub
A new study suggests that gently rubbing calendula oil, a marigold extract, into their bellies helped soothe menstrual cramps for up to 81 percent of women in 20 minutes. Calendula is rich in natural muscle-relaxing compounds that absorb readily through skin, the study authors say. Look for calendula oil in health food stores or online.

Treat yourself to an arch massage
A great on-the-spot cramp-killer: Sit on a comfortable carpet or pillow with the soles of your bare feet touching each other, then use your thumbs to firmly massage your arches for at least three minutes. “This acupressure technique helps stimulate the release of endorphins, which are powerful painkilling hormones,” says Susan Lark, M.D., author of Dr. Susan’s Solutions: The Menstrual Cramps Cure.

Try a low-dose estrogen patch
Prone to menstrual migraines? Cornell University researchers have now confirmed what you probably suspected all along: These throbbing headaches tend to be three times more severe than migraines that flare up at other times of the month! To prevent the pain, talk to your doctor about using an estrogen patch (such as Alora or Climara) during your premenstrual week. Just preventing that premenstrual estrogen plunge ends menstrual migraines for 50 percent of women, Yale researchers say.

Pull an all-nighter
If your aches and pains flare up during your premenstrual week, try this: One night each month—just before your PMS normally strikes—shortchange yourself of sleep by going to bed at 9 p.m. and setting the alarm for 1 a.m. so you can get up and watch movies, catch up on emails or read a great book. After one groggy day—and eight hours of catch-up sleep the next night—80 percent of women are completely symptom-free the rest of the month, say researchers at the University of California, San Diego. What gives? Although chronic sleep deprivation is bad news, one well-timed, groggy day revs up your brain’s production of painkilling neurotransmitters.

Dust off that hot water bottle
Your grandma was right—a hot water bottle or heating pad can be your best friend when hormone havoc hits. The proof? According to Stanford University researchers, just heating up your belly can soothe bad menstrual cramps as effectively as OTC meds. “Warming your abdomen relaxes spasming muscles and boosts blood flow, helping to flush out pain-triggering inflammation,” says Dr. Lark.

Still need a pain pill? If you’ve been taking acetaminophen, try switching to aspirin or ibuprofen. According to UCLA researchers, these two meds tamp down pelvic inflammation by 82 percent, doubling women’s pain relief.

Take a hike
In a New Zealand study, when women started getting regular outdoor exercise—roughly 30 minutes four times weekly—it cut their period problems in half within two months. The combination of sunlight and motion kick-starts production of serotonin, a hormone that helps you weather the hormonal ups and downs of your period with ease, explains Marie-Annette Brown, Ph.D., author of When Your Body Gets The Blues.

About 'Hands For Hope'

Hands for Hope works with the slum’s most vulnerable children and families – 90% of Namuwongo’s residents live below the absolute poverty line (earn less than 75p a day).

The slum itself is an extremely dangerous place for children. Alcoholism in men is rife and sexual exploitation and prostitution is common. Clean water is accessible, but the hygiene levels are extremely poor with untreated medical conditions an everyday problem.

Uganda Hands for Hope offers the most vulnerable children an education, a safe place to spend their days, free medical care, emotional support, and two essential meals a day. They also offer livelihood programmes for struggling mothers, reading & writing skills classes for non-sponsored children, and child protection initiatives.

Going to Maro's concert will save hundreds of children sufferering from famine and diseases ... This will be your chance to get entertainment by the best artists in Uganda and save the world.

Check out the photos below ...

After Maro spending 2 months with the organization as an intern ( in pursuit of his Makerere University Bachelors degree in development studies), he realized a lot of Help was needed to change the lives in the community of Namuwongo. As a way of supporting the works of the organization he decided to give a percentage (40%) of his proceeds to the 'Uganda hands for hope' to continue being "in the community for the community" just as the organization's slogan says!

The charity has been able to help the children through a sponsorship programme (it costs just £20 a month to sponsor a child) and charitable donations.

Six Important Reasons to Try a Circuit Workout https://www.howwe.ug/news/healthandfitness/1950/six-important-reasons-to-try-a-circuit-workout- Health And Fitness

During a book signing, a woman asked “ Do you workout everyday?” “No,” I responded. “As a father of two young boys and grandfather of one girl, I don’t have the time to work out everyday. I only workout three times per week. I do circuits.”

A circuit consists of two or more exercises done back-to-back with little rest between each exercise. Here are six reasons why you should try a circuit:

—It’s an efficient, time-saving workout

Unveils six-pack abs by lowering total body weight

Tones muscles

Builds upper and lower body

Torches calories

Burns fat

To get you started, try this upper/lower body circuit workout:

—Do 4 push-ups ( female or male version)

—Take a 30-60 second active rest

—Do 4 body weight squats

—Take a 30-60 second active rest

Do a second set of push-ups/body weight squats with 3 reps followed by a third set with 2 reps with an active rest between each exercise. During the 30-60 second active rest, you should be moving in some capacity ( e.g., marching in place, jumping jacks, dancing, etc.).

Because a circuit is a full-body workout, there is no need to workout daily, three times per week should suffice.

Séx Business Is Now Bad Business in Lagos Because of Ebola https://www.howwe.ug/news/healthandfitness/1944/sx-business-is-now-bad-business-in-lagos-because-of-ebola Health And Fitness

For many in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, the fear of Ebola has become the beginning of wisdom. Even when it involves matters related to séx and intimacy.

On a dark Wednesday night, the busy Allen Avenue, in the heart of Ikeja, the state capital, provided a glimpse of how much the fear of Ebola Virus has impacted on séx life in the part of the city that usually never sleeps.

Usually, it is a common sight to find skimpily dressed ladies of different shapes and sizes soliciting customers at night. However, in the wee hours of that night, at one of the famous spots for such activities, only a few men were seen hovering under the cover of darkness to satisfy their séxual urges. This was despite the impressive number of commercial séx workers at the junction.

“I drove past this spot with some friends around 11pm and three hours later, I still met the same women waiting for customers at the same spot.”

Said a middle-aged man who didn’t give his name. He said the moment the séx workers saw their vehicle stop; they rushed onto them.

“Suddenly, they struggled among themselves to be the first to reach us when we stopped the car. It was clear the ladies were desperate to make money that night,” he said, but declined to comment if he took any home.

A commercial séx worker in the vicinity, who simply gave her name as Linda, said patronage has reduced since the outbreak of Ebola.

She said, “People are afraid to patronise séx workers nowadays because of this Ebola thing. There was one incident that happened a few days ago when a man came to patronise one of us. He started touching the woman but she snubbed him, saying that she didn’t want to be caressed with his hands. When he said they should have séx, she said she preferred to do it fully dressed up and if he must use a condom.

“It is possible to have séx and not sweat. Also, the cold weather is good for séx at this moment. So, I usually tell my friends that during this period of Ebola outbreak, they should ensure they always use condom for protection and avoid the man’s sweat from touching them. Also, they should not do it in the dark, but put on the light so that they can see if the man is sweating or not.”

Linda further said she advises her friends to ensure that a ceiling or standing fan is switched on during séx and the man should also avoid going ‘extra rounds’ because the exertion would make them sweat. “Though I think there needs to be more awareness and sensitisation on this issue,” she added.

For businessman, Mr. Godfrey Okosun, avoiding séx this period is advisable because of reasons of infidelity.

“One may be faithful to his or her partner, but the partner may not be faithful. In that case, one may be at risk of not knowing the escapades of the other partner. So, I would advise people to avoid séx all together. And it’s the same rule that I apply to my séx life during this period,” he told Punch.

A civil servant, Ms. Gloria Akpandu, said it depends on the individual to decide whether to have séx or not.

“I don’t know much about the Ebola symptoms, but from what I have heard so far about avoiding body contacts such as handshakes, kissing and hugging, I have not had any intimate relationship with my boyfriend since Ebola found its way into Nigeria. Although I still think it depends on the couples in question,” she said.

Smoking A lot Of 'Shisha' Could Make Sheebah Run Mad https://www.howwe.ug/news/healthandfitness/1928/smoking-a-lot-of-shisha-could-make-sheebah-run-mad Health And Fitness

Sheebah Karungi lately is smoking a lot of shisha, that worries a lot of her fans because shisha is not as tranquil as she might think. A few months ago we wrote about how dangerous shisha smoking is highlighting that an hour of smoking shisha is more harmful than smoking 100 cigarettes.

I guess our dance hall queen Sheebah didn't get the memo.

Soaring numbers of Ugandan celebrities are smoking shishas - but experts warned that the Middle Eastern water pipe is not a safe alternative to cigarettes.

A study carried out by University of California San Francisco has found that whilst smoking a shisha exposes you to different chemicals, they are still harmful.

'We found that water-pipe smoking is not a safe alternative to cigarette smoking, nor is it likely to be an effective harm-reduction strategy.’

By measuring the levels of toxins in the blood, breath and urine after smoking, scientists found that those who smoked shisha exposed themselves to high levels of carbon monoxide.

Foods You Should Avoid If You Want A Better Sex Life https://www.howwe.ug/news/healthandfitness/1913/foods-you-should-avoid-if-you-want-a-better-sex-life Health And Fitness

Feel like your sex drive is not where you want it to be? You’re not alone even the writer of this story is a victim, just like you the reader.

With the abundance of sugar and carbohydrates in our daily diets, serious and healthy people have never been fatter. Eating these types of foods raises the blood glucose level, which leads to fatigue, tiredness and a lower sex drive. Check out the foods to avoid if you want to get laid (and enjoy it) on the weekend:

Use condoms to avoid unwanted pregnancies and STIs

Soda

Stop drinking soda — especially diet drinks, period. You may get a temporary caffeine boost, but you will feel totally unmotivated soon after when the buzz quickly subsides. Every person who rationalizes that diet soda is healthier is sadly mistaken. Studies have shown that diet sodas cause weight gain and increase the incidence of metabolic syndrome, which contributes to coronary heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

Instead of soda, just drink water. If you really don’t love water, add some lemon or try sparkling water, which comes in many flavors.

howwe

 Burgers and Hotdogs

Stay away from the burgers and hotdogs served at sporting events and dining halls. Not only are they composed of low-grade meats with higher chemical content, but they also lead to high rates of inflammation, which can make your hormones go out of whack. Instead, opt for organic, free-range meats. Not only do they taste better, but they also contain substantially lower amounts of harmful chemicals.

howwe

 French Fries

Sure, they taste awesome, but they’re totally addicting; one handful can easily become two or three in a blink. If you want to gain weight, feel sluggish, bloated and have a low libido, go for it. Fried foods are loaded with trans fats, which will kill your sex drive. Furthermore, trans fats have been shown to lower sperm quality, which could lead to infertility.

A good alternative is sweet potatoes fries. They, while still fried, offer many health benefits, like the breakdown of carbohydrates, which supports healthy blood sugar levels.

howwe

 Mixed Drinks

Drinking straight alcohol can suck. Unfortunately, most of us who chase or use mixed drinks opt for the sugary ones. So instead of the jungle juice, try tequila, soda and lime. Sugary mixed drinks lead to an increased waist size and will totally kill your libido.

 Ice Cream

Ice cream is delicious — there’s no better way to cap off your dinner than with a scoop and some sprinkles. But obviously, ice cream is pretty bad for you. It is loaded with sugars and artificial sweeteners, leads to fatigue, migraines and, sometimes, even depression.  A much better alternative is fruit, but if you’re not interested in totally giving up that dairy dessert, try some frozen yogurt instead.

 Pasta

It’s very easy to overdose on pasta. The nutritionally recommended one-cup serving is never enough. Once you load up on pasta, your body converts it into glucose, and unless you’re active, it will be stored as fat. This can contribute to fatigue and bloating. Add a side salad or grilled veggies to offset your pasta load. With some tomato sauce and your favorite meat, you won’t taste the difference.

 Breakfast Biscuits

They’re greasy, full of trans fats, and will certainly not leave you feeling amazing. Biscuits are a notoriously processed food, loaded with chemicals that will mess with hormones. The beauty of breakfast is the abundance of alternatives; go for an omelet, load it up with veggies and maybe even a protein. To take control of what you’re eating, the next time you eat out for breakfast, ask your server to hold the margarine and vegetable oil for your biscuit, and instead, have it cooked in olive oil or butter.

 Low fat diet

Fat has gotten a pretty bad reputation over the years, however, numerous studies have shown that it isn’t the fat that makes you fat — it’s the sugar. According to one study, a lower-fat diet contributes to a decrease in testosterone. Another study found that men with healthier blood sugar levels enjoyed better sex.

Aside from not being at peak in the bedroom, those who eat lower amounts of fat have higher rates of heart disease.  Stick with healthy fats like nuts, seeds, line-caught fish, grass-fed meats and you’ll be getting it on in no time.

Does masturbation cause prostate cancer? https://www.howwe.ug/news/healthandfitness/1901/does-masturbation-cause-prostate-cancer- Health And Fitness

Prostate cancer is cancer that starts in the prostate gland. The prostate is a small, walnut-sized structure that makes up part of a man's reproductive system. It wraps around the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body.

Alternative Names
Cancer - prostate; Biopsy - prostate; Prostate biopsy; Gleason score

Prostate cancer is a serious disease that affects thousands of men during middle and late age, with most prostate cancers occurring in men over age 65.

The prostate is a small gland that is found in a man’s pelvic cavity. It is located under the bladder, and surrounds the urethra. This gland, which is regulated by the hormone testosterone, produces seminal fluid, also known as semen, which is the substance containing sperm that exits the urethra during ejaculation. When an abnormal, malignant growth of cells or tumor forms in the prostate, this is called prostate cancer. This cancer can spread to other areas of the body, but even if it does, it is still called prostate cancer.

Who Is at Risk?

Prostate cancer usually occurs in men over the age of 65. Other risk factors for developing prostate cancer include:

  • age
  • a family history of prostate cancer
  • ethnicity or race (for instance, African American males are at a greater risk for developing prostate cancer)
  • obesity
  • genetic changes

Symptoms of Prostate Cancer

Early prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms. Advanced prostate cancers can cause some symptoms, such as:

  • Problems passing urine, including a slow or weak urinary stream or the need to urinate more often, especially at night.
  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)
  • Trouble getting an erection (impotence)
  • Pain in the hips, back (spine), chest (ribs), or other areas from cancer spread to bones
  • Weakness or numbness in the legs or feet, or even loss of bladder or bowel control from cancer pressing on the spinal cord.

Other diseases can also cause many of these same symptoms. For example, trouble passing urine is much more often caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) than cancer. Still, it is important to tell your doctor if you have any of these problems so that the cause can be found and treated, if needed.

Big Thought: Does masturbation increase the risk of prostate cancer? There is no evidence of a consistent relationship of any kind.

Treating Prostate Cancer

If you are diagnosed with prostate cancer, your treatment will depend on how severe your cancer is and whether it has spread. If the cancer is not aggressive, your physician may recommend watchful waiting, or active surveillance. Surgery, radiation, cryotherapy, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy are also treatment options. Your physician will find the correct treatment for your cancer based on your age, health status, and the stage of your cancer.

Prognosis

If prostate cancer is diagnosed early on and has not metastasized from the origin tumor, the survival rates are favorable. Early detection and treatment are key to a positive outcome. If you think you have symptoms of prostate cancer, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with your doctor.

Prevention

Recently the guidelines for screening for prostate cancer have changed. Screening for prostate cancer is recommended every two years for men ages 55 to 69, with an emphasis on weighing the risks and benefits with your care provider. Those who are at high risk (family history, African American descent) should talk with their doctor about the risks and benefits of screening before 55. Studies have suggested an increased risk for prostate cancer in men who eat high amounts red meat and high-fat dairy, eating more fruits and vegetables and reducing the amount of red meat you consume can help.

Can Marijuana Really Boost Your Orgasm? https://www.howwe.ug/news/healthandfitness/1900/can-marijuana-really-boost-your-orgasm Health And Fitness

We all know sex provides a natural high, but using a marijuana-infused lube can apparently take you even higher. For those looking for a bigger and better climax, Foria has designed a new personal lubricant for women comprised of liquid coconut oil and medical-grade cannabis that can supposedly produce mind-blowing orgasms.

According to their website, each spray contains 2 mg of THC, and you should apply the lube at least a half hour before engaging in sexual activity to get the full benefits. It hasn’t been evaluated by the FDA, and you can only get it with a prescription from a physician in California, but Colorado and Washington are soon to follow.

No, it doesn't get you high; instead, it promises heightened sensations and arousal below-the-belt when you apply it. That said, you could also injest it (if you really felt like it, or if your partner went down on you while you were using it). Taking it orally could produce some of the same effects of any other edible medical marijuana, says Brittany Confer, director of patient care and communications at Foria

It sounds great in theory, but does it live up to the hype? According to one review by Amelia McDonell-Parry, Editor-in-Chief of The Frisky, the lube didn't get her high, but her vagina definitely felt the effects. "Like my vagina was kicking back on the beach in Mexico, without a care in the world," she writes on The Frisky. That said, she admitted that it wasn't a miracle lube and although it made her wetter and more relaxed than usual, she didn't report any 15-minute orgasms (which was previously promised in another review). However, she did say she had a "stronger, longer almost slower orgasm." She also noted that it’s probably easier to use if you're familiar with the effects of marijuana already.

So is marijuana actually a libido booster? Ob-gyn Alyssa Dweck, M.D., coauthor of V is for Vagina says she isn't aware of any studies that prove marijuana enhances orgasms, so she can't comment on Foria from a medical standpoint. However, "the potential for relaxation from marijuana absorption through the vaginal mucosa makes sense."

But, while coconut oil is a favorite natural lube for some women, for others it may increase the risk of infection, so she suggests trying it at your own risk. (Which is good advice for drugs of any kind, actually.) Not to mention, oil can break down condoms and make them less effective, so you would need to use a non-latex condom for STD protection.

So can you take too much? The recommended dosage is 4-8 sprays, which is an average of 12 mg of THC. (To put that into perspective, a Colorado state task force recently proposed guidelines that would limit edible marijuana to servings of 10 mg.) Confer explains that taking more than the recommended dosage orally may produce the same effects as injesting too much edible marijuana (for more on that, check out Maureen Dowd's recent column in the New York Times about eating an entire pot chocolate bar).

"But when you're using it topically it does not have a huge psychoactive effect on your mind. You don't get stoned." Plus it would probably be hard to use too much topically anyway—after all, you can only use so much lube. Still, the product has not been reviewed by the FDA so we're not sure of any adverse side effects that may come from using topically.

Nigerian Nurse Who Treated Ebola Patient Dies Of The Disease https://www.howwe.ug/news/healthandfitness/1852/nigerian-nurse-who-treated-ebola-patient-dies-of-the-disease Health And Fitness

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Nigerian authorities rushed to obtain isolation tents Wednesday in anticipation of more Ebola infections as they disclosed five more cases of the virus and a death in Africa's most populous nation, where officials were racing to keep the gruesome disease confined to a small group of patients.

The five new Nigerian cases were all in Lagos, a megacity of 21 million people in a country already beset with poor health care infrastructure and widespread corruption, and all five were reported to have had direct contact with one infected man.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization began a meeting to decide whether the crisis, the worst recorded outbreak of its kind, amounts to an international public health emergency. At least 932 deaths in four countries have been blamed on the illness, with 1,711 reported cases.

In recent years, the WHO has declared an emergency only twice, for swine flu in 2009 and polio in May. The declaration would probably come with recommendations on travel and trade restrictions and wider Ebola screening. It also would be an acknowledgment that the situation is critical and could worsen without a fast global response.

The group did not immediately confirm the new cases reported in Nigeria. And Nigerian authorities did not release any details on the latest infections, except to say they all had come into direct contact with the sick man who arrived by plane in Lagos late last month.

With the death toll mounting in the region, Liberia's president announced a state of emergency late Wednesday and said it may result in the suspension of some citizens' rights. She lamented that fear and panic had kept many family members from sending sick relatives to isolation centers.

"Ignorance and poverty, as well as entrenched religious and cultural practices, continue to exacerbate the spread of the disease," President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said.

And in Sierra Leone, where enforcing quarantines of sick patients also has been met with resistance, some 750 soldiers deployed to the Ebola-ravaged east as part of "Operation Octopus."

Ebola, which causes some victims to bleed from the eyes, mouth and ears, can only be transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of someone who is sick — blood, semen, saliva, urine, feces or sweat.

Millions in Lagos live in cramped conditions without access to flushable toilets. Signs posted across the city warn people not to urinate in public.

Kenneth Akihomi, a 47-year-old worker installing fiber-optic cable, said he was carefully washing his hands to avoid infection. But he said most people were relying on faith to stay healthy.

"They're not panicking. They are godly people," he said. "They believe they can pray, and maybe very soon there will be cure."

The revelation of more infections also came amid a public-sector doctors' strike in Nigeria that began in early July. So far, health workers monitoring the latest Ebola patients are still on the job.

Nigeria is the fourth West African country to be hit by the Ebola outbreak since it first emerged in March in the remote tropical forests of Guinea. The disease then spread to neighboring Sierra Leona and Liberia before reaching Nigeria, where it surfaced shortly before the government drew criticism for its response to the abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls by Islamic militants back in April. The girls are still missing.

Nigerian authorities said Tuesday that doctors did not suspect Patrick Sawyer was suffering from Ebola when the 40-year-old Liberian-American arrived by plane late last month in Lagos, where the streets are a bewildering mix of wealth and abject poverty, awash in luxury SUVs and decrepit buses.

Sawyer, who worked for the Liberian government in Monrovia and had a wife and three young daughters in Minnesota, was on a business flight to Nigeria when he fell ill. Officials say a nurse who treated him has died and five others are sick with Ebola, including a doctor involved in his care.

West African countries pledged at a meeting in July to step up their surveillance at airports and borders following the start of the outbreak. But the early symptoms of Ebola — fever, muscle aches and vomiting — are similar to much more common tropical diseases such as malaria.

The specter of the virus spreading through Nigeria is particularly alarming, said Stephen Morse, an epidemiology professor at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health.

"It makes you nervous when so many people are potentially at risk," he said.

Authorities in Liberia said Sawyer's sister had recently died of Ebola, though Sawyer said he had not had close contact with her while she was ill.

In announcing Sawyer's death, Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu maintained late last month that Nigerian officials had been vigilant in isolating him.

"It was right there (at the airport) that the problem was noticed because we have maintained our surveillance," he told reporters. "And immediately, he went into the custody of the port health services of the federal ministry of health so there was no time for him to mingle in Lagos. He has not been in touch with any other person again since we took him from the airport."

Chukwu's comments were at odds with remarks made Tuesday by the Lagos state health commissioner, who said doctors did not suspect Ebola immediately and identified Sawyer as a possible case only after he had been hospitalized for about a day.

Sawyer, who had a fever and was vomiting on the plane, was coming from the infected country of Liberia but had a layover in Togo. As a result, officials may not have initially known his original point of departure, and it was unclear whether he was traveling on a Liberian or American passport.

Experts say people infected with Ebola can spread the disease only after they show symptoms. Since the incubation period can last up to three weeks, some of the Nigerians who treated Sawyer are only now showing signs of illness.

The national health minister on Wednesday said special tents would be used to establish isolation wards in all of Nigeria's states. Authorities were setting up an emergency center in Lagos to deal with Ebola and expected the facility to be "fully functional" by Thursday, he said.

Also Wednesday, the Spanish Defense Ministry said a medically equipped plane was ready to fly to Liberia to bring back a Spanish missionary priest who has Ebola. At the same time, Saudi officials reported a suspected Ebola death, underscoring the risk of the disease spreading by air travel even as many airlines curtail their flights to the most infected cities.

Circumcised versus Uncircumcised https://www.howwe.ug/news/healthandfitness/1845/circumcised-versus-uncircumcised Health And Fitness

There are several potential advantages and disadvantages associated with circumcising boys shortly after they are born.

For example:

  • Circumcision may reduce the risk of developing a urinary tract infection (UTI), such as a bladder infection.
  • Circumcision may reduce the risk of getting some types of sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV and genital herpes.
  • Circumcision may reduce the risk of female partners developing some types of sexually transmitted infections, such as bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis.
  • Circumcision may reduce the risk of developing cancer of the penis.
  • A penis that is regarded by most men and women as being more attractive.

However, there are much more effective and less invasive ways of preventing these conditions. For example, practising good hygiene to prevent UTIs, or using a condom to prevent STIs.

Most healthcare professionals maintain that the potential benefits of circumcision are not strong enough to justify routine childhood circumcision. Critics of circumcision argue that it has disadvantages, such as:

  • Reduced sensitivity – an uncircumcised penis is more sensitive than a circumcised penis, meaning that circumcised men may experience less pleasure during sex.
  • Potential complications of circumcision – these include excessive bleeding, post-operative infection and, in rare cases, injury to the urethra. These complications are thought to outweigh any potential benefits.

Critics have also argued that routinely circumcising baby boys on medical grounds violates the principle of consent to treatment. They say that circumcision should only be performed when a boy is old enough to make an informed decision about whether he wishes to be circumcised.

First condom designed to kill HIV 'could be available to buy within months'

  • The VivaGel condom is the brainchild of Australian bio-tech firm Starpharma
  • Gel in lubricant found to be 99.9% effective at deactivating HIV, herpes and human papilloma virus cases
  • Received approval by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration - similar to a CE mark in Europe
  • Firms behind the condom say it could be available within months

A new condom designed to kill the HIV virus could be available to buy within months, after key regulatory approval.

Tests have shown the VivaGel condom is effective in deactivating 99.9 per cent of HIV, herpes and human papilloma virus cases.

Australian bio-tech firm Starpharma has developed the antiviral Viva Gel, the active ingredient designed to tackle sexually transmitted infections, in the condom's lubricant.

A new condom, designed by the Australian bio-technic firm Starpharma, to kill the HIV virus could be available to buy within months after it received vital approval.

The product has now received a receipt of Conformity of Assessment Certification by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration - a similar certificate to the CE mark in Europe - paving the way for mass production.

It means the condom, the first of its kind, should be available to buy in the coming months.

The condoms are lubricated with VivaGel, which contains 0.5 per cent astodrimer sodium - a non-antibiotic, antimicrobial drug designed specifically as a compound against HIV.

It is hoped the gel will help reduce the transmission of HIV and other STIs, while also reducing the risk of pregnancy.

It is being produced by Australian bio-tech firm Starpharma in partnership with another firm called Ansell, which is responsible for around 70 per cent of Australia's condom market.

The recent TGA approval came after the condom was assessed in line with a set of requirements relating to safety and performance.

In Australia the prevalence of STIs continues to rise.

Genital herpes, caused by the herpes simplex virus, is estimated to affect one in eight Australians aged 25 years and over, although many are unaware they are carrying the infection and pass it on without knowing.

The VivaGel condom, contains VivaGel in the lubricant. Tests have shown the gel is effective at deactivating 99.9 per cent of HIV, pictured under the microscope, herpes and human pappilloma virus cases

The rate of newly diagnosed HIV infections rose 10 per cent in the 12 months to the end of 2012 - the largest increase in Australia in the last 20 years.

And figures reveal the number of infections diagnosed in 2013 remains at a 20-year high, representing a 70 per cent increase on the number detected in 1999, when cases were at their lowest level.

Ansell president and general manager of the sexual wellness global business unit, Peter Carroll, said consumers could expect to see the 'ground-breaking new sexual health' product on the shelves soon.

'Ansell looks forward to rolling out its marketing and sales campaign to support the launch of LifeStyles Dual Protect over the coming months with the first product expected to be available on shelves soon,' he said.

Smoking Marijuana Without Memory Loss? New Research Shows Hope! https://www.howwe.ug/news/healthandfitness/1698/-smoking-marijuana-without-memory-loss-new-research-shows-hope Health And Fitness

The FDA has approved drugs based on marijuana’s active ingredient, THC, for limited use in some cancer patients, to help combat the nausea and vomiting experienced during chemotherapy treatments. It is limited because the main side-effect, memory loss, is such a concern. Little has been known about the molecular underpinnings of the memory impairments caused by marijuana. But a recent discovery by researchers at the Louisiana University Health Sciences Center has found a way to stop the memory loss side effect.
“Our studies have solved the longtime mystery of how marijuana causes neuronal and memory impairments,” lead investigator Chu Chen said Thursday in a statement. “The results suggest that the use of medical marijuana could be broadened if patients concurrently take a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as ibuprofen.”
The memory loss that comes from using THC-based therapies is the result of an increase in the enzyme COX-2 in the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for memory and learning. Ibuprofen can lower COX-2 levels, thus preventing the memory loss. This not only works for patients taking THC therapies, but it can also work to prevent the neurological damage from Alzheimer’s Disease, opening up possibilities for treatments for other neurological diseases.
“Our results suggest that the unwanted side effects of cannabis could be eliminated or reduced, while retaining its beneficial effects, by administering a COX-2 inhibitor along with [delta-9-THC] for the treatment of intractable medical conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease,” Chen reported.
Alzheimer’s is a common form of dementia that is a neurodegenerative disease that eventually progresses toward death. First reported in the early 20th century it currently affects 26.2 million people around the world and is predicted to strike 1 in 85 people by 2050.
Why does any of this matter to an addiction treatment center? Because we are always interested in the science that helps people recover…for addiction or any illness. No drug is to be vilified. Prescription pain killers, for example, are appropriate for some people at some times. Medically used THC is no different. Any medication that can bring an end to suffering should be researched and clinical trials conducted when appropriate. Our goal in addiction treatment is to help those with addiction recover and help educate physicians as to the dangers of addiction where it exists, not deny access to medication to those in need
