18 arrested for Shisha smoking as police struggles to recover three year old from kidnappers in Kampala

At least 18 people were arrested by Uganda police force following an operation with the Uganda national consumers organization in areas covered by Jinja Road police station. The operation was in line with the fight against Shisha smoking in bars around Kampala.

At least 18 people were arrested by Uganda police force following an operation with the Uganda national consumers organization in areas covered by Jinja Road police station. The operation was in line with the fight against Shisha smoking in bars around Kampala. 

The 18 were found smoking Shisha in differently bars including; Gabs, HO2 both in bugolobi as well as Kyoto in Centenary Park. 

Luke Owoyesigire, the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson warns businesses selling Shisha to stop or face arrests as the police operations will not stop anytime soon. The suspects face charges including obstruction of justice as some people attempted to obstruct police officers while others are charged under section 16 subsection 2 which prohibits any involvement in Shisha  under the tobacco control Act 2015.

Talibita Moses the legal officer Uganda national health consumers organization said they lodged a complaint with the Jinja road police station and the officers visited areas where members of the public had been complaining. 

He says the organisation cannot blacklist bars selling Shisha since only KCCA has that mandate.  He however adds that some of these bars are protected by police. He promises that they will continue registering complaints and involving police to arrest culprits.

Meanwhile,  police in old Kampala are working around the clock to find a one Mugizi a three year old child who was kidnapped by unknown people over the weekend. The kidnappers have asked for Shillings 500,000 from the parents. 

“We are doing everything to find this child. We shall also make sure that the people involved are arrested and taken to courts of law" Owoyesigire said.
