Established in Uganda in 1991 as an independent, locally registered, child focused organisation, SOS Children’s Villages Uganda is part of SOS Children's Villages International; a non-governmental and non-denominational child-care organisation. SOS Children’s Villages Uganda is headed by Olive Birungi Lumonya, National Director. Having operated in Uganda for the last 25 years, SOS boasts of over 60,000 children and 1,500 families countrywide as beneficiaries of their programmes.

The organisation provides all round family-based care for children who have lost parental care. SOS also implements family strengthening programs to support vulnerable families to become independent and autonomous so they can be in position to raise their children on their own thus preventing child-family separations.

SOS operates in 4 locations (Kakiri, Entebbe, Gulu and Fort Portal) and takes care of 6,700 children; providing family based care, education and health services among others.

Under its education initiative, SOS Uganda operates 7 high-quality, Hermann Gmeiner educational institutions – 4 kindergartens in Kakiri, Entebbe, Gulu and Fort Portal; 2 primary schools in Kakiri and Gulu and 1 secondary school in Kakiri.

The schools host children from the SOS villages and the communities around them. The schools are characterized by holistic child development activities, high quality teaching and learning, high standard skill based training and are sensitive to the plight of every child. The current school enrolment is 1,143 boys and girls.

SOS Children’s Villages Uganda also operates 4 Hermann Gmeiner medical facilities in Entebbe, Kakiri, Gulu and Fort Portal at their locations. The medical facilities provide access to high quality prevention and curative services for family based care children, staff, caregivers and the communities.

In partnership with other organisations and local government departments in health, SOS runs services that include HIV/AIDS testing and counselling, maternal child health and nutrition, immunisation, community outreach programs, etc.
