A joint operation involving police and the army in Kabale municipality has culminated into the arrest of 62 people ahead of the Gorilla in the Mist Motor rally this weekend.

The suspects including fourteen commercial sex workers and forty-eight suspected thugs, were picked up from several night spots in Kabale municipality last night.

Most of the suspects were picked up from Bombocha Pub, new California T & J Pub and Accommodation and Oasis Pub. Others were intercepted walking along the streets.

According to Dickens Bindeeba, the Kabale District Police Commander, the operation was aimed at curbing crime since the motor rally that starts on Friday is expected to attract many high profile drivers from the East African region.

According to Bindeeba, they were forced to carry out the joint operation with the army following a public outcry on the escalation of theft.  He explains that most of the suspects were picked up for lack of identification cards and failure to explain what they were doing out at night.

On February 5th, unidentified thugs robbed unspecified amount of money, ATM cards, vital documents and a mobile phone from Fr. Teophil Owamani, a Priest attached to Christ the King Parish in Kabale town shortly after he disembarked from a bus from Kampala at 2am. The thugs also assaulted the priest before making off with their loot.

According to a statement from the Uganda Tourism Board, the event shall have 38 driver crews from Uganda and across the borders who shall be traversing over 350 KM for the weekend action.

Desh Kananura, Jus Mangat, Ronald Sebugizi and Arthur Blick are among the key drivers who are participating in this event.
