Government has under the mandate of Uganda Communications Commission opened up 50 Sim Card replacement centres to help people whose phones have been stolen, recover their cards within a shortest period of time.

The decision was reached at during a cabinet sitting on Monday April 16 2018. The assistant government spokesperson Col. Shabani Bantariz told a media briefing in Kampala this morning, that the Uganda Communications Commission, UCC will next week announce where these centres will be located.

People whose sim cards have been lost or damaged, will then go to these centres and register. The centres will be managed by personnel from UCC, together with telecom companies, to authenticate and verify one’s identity.

According to Bantariza, no individual will be allowed to register using someone else’s National ID. After registration, one will wait for 24 hours for their simcard to be activated.

“Right now, the government has started with 50 centres. We cannot chew what we can’t swallow. Let’s start with those and see how fast they work or how many to add to ease Sim Card replacement. UCC is already on the same page on this” he said.
