Kampala Capital City Authority, KCCA has this morning launched the Kampala Traffic Control Centre that is meant to remotely monitor traffic at 12 junctions in the city and performance of traffic signals. The city has 40 cameras at the junctions.

Jennifer Musisi the KCCA Executive Director says the authority wants to upscale this to mobile applications so the public can get information on which route is better to travel at what particular point in time to make traveling and mobility more efficient in Kampala. “The smart traffic lights will go a long way in easing the commendable work tht police is doing as regards traffic management in the city” Musisi said.

She added that so far 12 junctions have been connected, but the authority intends to connect 75 junctions across the city. “We shall also offer parking guideline facilities. We shall be able to advise citizens on where there is available parking within the city” she added.

There will also be emergency support services in the event of an accident as cameras at the junctions will quickly pick this up and coordinate quick response with the different emergency response providers,

She thanked their partners of Uganda Police Force, World Bank and NITA Uganda among others for supporting the initiative.

The managing director NITA James Saaka congratulated the authority for reaching such milestone.

“We have been working with KCCA in developing a smart city towards improving service delivery using ICT” he said.

Dr. Stephen Kasiima, the head of police traffic department commended KCCA for the initiative. “This is an exciting time to be in Kampala, the time Ugandans spend in traffic jam will be greatly reduced. We thank KCCA and its partners” Kasiima said.

Dr. Kasiima said the police traffic department has been working with the authority and tried their best to reduce travel time, costs and accidents. “This has been relied on some rods in Kampala” he added.
