President Yoweri Museveni could become the first East African President if the submissions of Kenyan Deputy President are to be put into practice.

While speaking to over 800 delegates attending the Africa Now summit at Speke resort Munyonyo on Tuesday, DP Ruto said the region needs President Museveni whom he referred to as his father.

According to Ruto, the region is still facing several challenges especially with borders and relationships that are souring; something the president could help with.

He says that instead of fighting one another, EAC member states should be thinking of removing any boundaries especially borderlines and trade barriers as well as work permits.

“Your Excellency, you are the father figure in our region, we are looking up to you for leadership, you are the Mzee and you cannot run away from responsibility, I am telling you this as your son. You have to provide leadership for East Africa to match forward. We cannot afford to roll back from the gains we have made as East Africans” Ruto told Museveni.

He added that East Africa should now be discussing federation and not closing borders, adding that they are concerned over closure of borders by some countries which do not want to trade with others.

This submission was supported by Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda who said the borderlines were introduced by colonialists to divide Africa and that this needs to be avoided for Africa to successfully move forward.

At the event, Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, Egypt, Nigeria among other countries were represented except Rwanda.

The summit continues today with discussions focusing mainly on trade relations.
