Property worth millions of shillings has been reduced to ashes after a fire gutted a girls' dormitory at St Andrew's Secondary school in Rubindi Kashari north Mbarara district.

The Dormitory that accommodated over 200 girls caught fire on Monday night while learners were in classes for evening prep.

Although the cause of the fire is yet to be established, school authorities are attributing the fire outbreak to an act of arson.

Students who preferred anonymity said they saw a huge cloud of smoke coming from the dormitory and rushed out of their classes to put it out. They say it took concerted efforts from students and community members to extinguish the huge flames.

Rev. Fr Felix Bikwatsizehi, the School Chaplain and parish priest of Rubindi says over two hundred girls lost their belongings in the inferno. He revealed that he wants police to conduct thorough investigations to identify and arrest the persons behind the fires.

The Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson Samson Kasasira says investigations are currently underway to establish the cause of the fire.

Mbarara Secondary School, Rushanje Girls School in Rwampara, Mbarara View High School Katete, and St Andrews Secondary School Rubindi are among the several schools in Mbarara and the surrounding areas that have reported fires in the past two months.
