Ugandan women of voting age (18 and above) will on 3rd July 2018 go to polls to elect the Women Councils. 

Uganda last held Women Council elections 15years ago and therefore this according to Peace Mutuzo the state Minister for Gender, presents an opportunity the country does not want to lose.

The National Women’s Council’s objective is to bring all women of Uganda together for development purposes, irrespective of their social, economic status or political affiliation.

Minister Mutuzo told the media in Kampala today, that these councils play a significant role in mobilizing women to participate in different social, political and economic developmental activities. 

She added that they are machinery for advocating for the wellbeing of women in Uganda by providing a platform for airing out views of the people at the grassroots, and that the Chairperson of the Women Council at the village level serves as the Secretary for Women at that the village level and also plays an important role of being coordinator for public health in her village. 

On Tuesday (yesterday), the Electoral Commission issued a revised roadmap for the election of Women Council leaders right from the Village to National level. 
The EC chairperson, Justice Byabakama explained that this election process kicks off this Friday, 22nd June 2018 with the compilation of the village women’s register, followed by the display of the Village Women’s register between 26th and 27th June 2018.

The positions of the five (5) Members of the Village Women’s Committee include; the Chairperson Women Council, Vice Chairperson Women Council, General Secretary Women Council, Secretary for Finance Women Council, and Secretary for Publicity Women Council.

Campaigns for this election will be held from 29th June to 2nd July 2018. Thereafter, the elections will be held on 3rd July 2018.

“I take this opportunity to implore all women citizens of Uganda aged 18 years and above to ensure that they are fully registered in their villages because those that are not registered will automatically be excluded from the entire electoral process” Mutuzo said.
