The Ugandan delegation led by Speaker Rabecca Kadaga at the 139th assembly of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva, Switzerland, voted to permanently ban debate on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) subject during their seatings.
One of the most influencial women in Uganda, Winnie Byanyima, wife to senior opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye has thrown jibes and tantrum at Hon. Rabecca for voting against the gay agenda in what she termed as "Uncivilized and unchristian behavior".
Winnie Byanyima took to her twitter platform to show her dissatisfaction by attacking Hon. Rabecca Kadaga and other delegates, "Gay agenda permanently banned from IPU assemblies. Shame on speaker Kadaga 4 denying vulnerable people rights, inorder to gain some popularity".
The LGBT agenda had been presented to the Assembly for debate as an "emergency item" on the agenda of the upcoming 140th IPU Assembly, however, IPU president Gabriela Cuevas Barron put the question to a vote by member states hence Speaker Hon. Kadaga voting against the move backed mainly by Canada and Belgium.
Few months ago, Winnie Byanyima's son, Anselm, who is a student at Havard University dominated headlines for allegedly being gay.
