Court in Wakiso has convicted a 52-year-old Ali Kibirige, a resident of Nabweru in Nansana Municipality for the murder of his brother in law, also deputy Imam of Nateete National Mosque sheikh Yunus Lubega.

Prosecution alleges that on April 7, 2016, Kibirige, together with Hajara Nankinga, the wife to the deceased and others still at large, hacked Sheikh Lubega from his home in Sumbwe, Wakiso district. Lubega died on the way to Rubaga hospital.

The murder had been linked to the infamous attacks against Muslim clerics during the time but police investigations pointed to Nankinga and her brother Kibirige.

The deceased’s wife, Nankinga later conceded that she masterminded the murder and was sentenced to ten years of imprisonment. But, Kibirige denied the charges.

However, court presided over by Justice Henry Kaweesa Isabirye on Thursday found him guilty and sentenced him to a custodial sentence of sixteen years in prison. Justice Kaweesa noted that evidence presented by the investigating teams and testimonies by the deceased's children placed him on the scene of the crime.
