Not all hope is lost after the old Akii-Bua Stadium lost its abode to Lira Hospital. There could even be better news if the new Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium venture is implemented.

The government of Uganda is on course with that of China to construct a new facility under the name Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium at alternative 45-acre land in Erute, 3kms from Lira town

Lira residents are waiting for the start of the construction of Akii Bua Memorial Stadium after 1.2 billion shillings was set aside for it in the 2015/2016 budget.

President Yoweri Museveni first announced the government decision during the 2011 general elections campaigns. The Commissioner for Sport at the Ministry of Education, Lameck Omara Apita says construction will start once the money is availed when the new financial year begins in July.

Apita, however, says the stadium will be a standard modern sporting facility not an international stadium as initially planned. The district sports officer, Leo Alani says the stadium will help revive sports in the area by providing a training ground for athletes.

The proposed Akii-Bua Stadium in Lira is a 25,000 capacity seater bawl complete with an electronic score board, an athletics track and venues for indoor sports
