Makerere University academic staff association (Muasa) has started the election process to choose new executive members to replace the current team headed by Dr. Muhammed Kiggundu Musoke.

The Muasa Electoral Commission chairperson Associate Prof. Muhammad Ntale asked all academic staff who might not turn up for physical voting on Monday December 11 to participate in the two-day proxy voting exercise between Thursday and Friday.

Staff voting under this category are required to submit scanned copies of their ballots wherever they are to electoral commission email together with their identification documents before 5:00pm on Friday.

About 1,500 Muasa members are expected to participate in this election. Assoc. Prof. Ntale says they expect improved turn-up since voting has been decentralized. Apart from proxy voting, each of the 10 colleges will be a polling station.

Only one woman, Dr. Hellen Nambalirwa Nkabala from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences is in the three-person race for the position of Muasa chairperson. The other candidates are Dr. Fredrick Lugya Kiwuwa from the University Library, and Dr. Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi, the current association publicist from the School of Forestry, Environmental and Geographical Sciences (SFEGS).

Those vying for Muasa vice chairperson are Christopher Muganga and Associate Prof. Edward Nector Mwavu. On the position of General Secretary, Dr. Micheal Walimbwa and Robert Kakuru are competing. There are three candidates vying for the position of Vice Secretary General--Associate Prof. Lawrence Mugisha, Dr. Geoffrey Nuwagaba and Dr. John Atwebembere Mushomi.

The candidates for Treasurer include Dr. Eric Nzibonera, CPA Chris Charles Kitale and Hussein Oria while Dr. Anthony Tibaingana and Allan Ochieng are vying for Public and External Relations position.
The next Muasa leaders take office in January 2018 until December 2019.
